Two-phase immersion cooling technology is the next-generation solution for our digital data centers world. High-powered data centersare increasingly used for everything from internet searches to securing the Bitcoin Blockchain to artificial intelligence, and it is crucial we make sure they are energy efficient, sustainable and productive. Bitfury® and its wholly-owned subsidiary Allied Control™ are leading the way with their signature patented custom-designed two-phase immersion cooling solution.
Data centers often contain millions of computer chips. As these chips run, they generate a significant amount of heat. In traditional data centers, resources are spent on electrical air-conditioning systems that keep the chips cool, which can be expensive and often use energy derived from fossil fuels. Immersion cooling provides an environmentally responsible solution to today’s challenges. Fluids like Novec by 3M are engineered to evaporate as the chips generate heat. These fluids are safe for computer chips and keep the chips cool as they run and generate heat. When the Novec fluid evaporates, it rises to the top of the container, where it comes into contact with pipes containing cooled water. Upon contact with the cooled pipes, the Novec vapor condenses and returns to the pool where it continues cooling the chips.
Immersion cooling is extremely effective and can handle an amazing 40 megawatts of IT computing power, with 252 kilowatts available per rack, all without using excess electricity for air conditioning and cooling.
Bitfury’s immersion cooling platform brings more than 3 times the computing power to each rack, reducing the space needed for an enterprise-level data center by up to 90 percent.
Many new technology applications (like artificial intelligence, internet of things and machine learning) require higher levels of computing power and efficiency, as well as more localized and scalable computing solutions. Immersion cooling enables data processing much closer to the location it is generated, leading to lower time latency in critical applications like healthcare research.
In a two-phase immersion cooled system, electronic components are submerged into a bath of dielectric heat transfer liquids, which are much better heat conductors than air, water or oil. With their various low boiling points (ie. 49°C vs. 100°C in water), the fluids boil on the surface of heat generating components and rising vapor passively takes care of heat transfer.
In contrast to submersion oil cooling, liquids are clean, environmentally friendly and non-flammable. No heatsinks, pumps or jets are required tat hardware to keep it cool. Circulation occurs passively by the natural process of evaporation and without expending any extra energy.
This simplicity eliminates conventional cooling hardware and results in better cooling efficiency. This cutting-edge process is up to 4,000 times more effective than traditional air cooling, and it is silent, non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
Our immersion cooling data centers have been operating at scale since 2015, in all climates, with best in class power usage effectiveness – and much more efficient than air cooled data centers. The proprietary immersion cooling solution developed by Bitfury and Allied Control is being used in our data center in the Republic of Georgia (right outside of the capital city, Tbilisi). This is one of the largest implementations of immersion cooling to date. The Tbilisi center takes full advantage of the proprietary immersion cooling technology developed by Allied Control and Bitfury.
